NEW YORK — Former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama are expanding their influence in film and television with a new project bringing a Broadway musical to streaming audiences.
Through their production company Higher Ground Productions, the Obamas are producing a film adaptation of the Tony Award–winning musical A Strange Loop.
The production continues the company’s focus on projects that highlight diverse voices and cultural storytelling.
Originally debuting on Broadway in 2022, A Strange Loop quickly became one of the most talked-about productions of its season for its innovative narrative and exploration of identity, art, and personal expression.
Arts leaders say bringing Broadway productions to streaming platforms allows theater to reach audiences far beyond New York.
For many viewers, it may also serve as an introduction to contemporary Black theater.
